Objectives and Key Results (OKR) is a framework for setting, communicating, and tracking company goals and outcomes. OKRs are a process in which company, team, and individual objectives are linked to the desired outcomes hierarchically. OKRs help firms become more transparent and focused by assembling workers around common objectives.
An OKR framework contains three things: objectives, key results, and initiatives. An objective describes the company's long-term goal, while key results are the expected results. Initiatives identify the work required to achieve the key results.
1. An objective is the company's ultimate goal, which is described as a future outcome. They set a clear path, as well as motivation. We can think of it as a destination on a map.
2. A key result is a performance indicator that changes its value as a worker progresses towards the objective. A key result is comparable to the distance one must travel to reach his destination.
3. An initiative describes the tasks that need to be completed in order to complete the objective. An initiative describes how an individual plans to get to his destination (if the objective is a destination and the key result is the distance one must travel, how does one get there–by car, boat or plane?).
